EQ2Emu FAQ
Draft forum post
This FAQ describes the project's historical target, current development status, supported clients, and known client-specific limitations.
Last updated: September 28, 2026
What is EQ2Emu trying to recreate?
The primary objective is to recreate the EverQuest II experience from the 2004–2005 era, before Kingdom of Sky was released.
That target includes the original progression and world structure, including:
- the original class progression;
- the original Isle of Refuge experience;
- the original city suburbs; and
- the original class-quest NPCs and related quest flow.
The project is therefore focused on historical behavior and content rather than automatically reproducing every feature found in later live versions of EverQuest II.
Does a later client mean that later-era content is included?
No. Client support and content-era support are separate concerns.
A client may be useful because its protocol, assets, or zone files are compatible with the emulator while the server content remains intentionally focused on the pre-Kingdom of Sky target. The supported-client list below includes the known limitations for each client.
Were quest-update icons part of the 2004–2005 experience?
No. Quest-update indicators on NPC names and other spawns are not part of the intended 2004–2005 presentation.
EverQuest II described NPC quest-update icons, quest-type icons, and quest titles in the NPC details window as new functionality in a June 13, 2012 update. See June Update Plans.
For the historical target, players should expect to identify quest NPCs through exploration, dialogue, quest text, and other era-appropriate clues rather than modern-style quest markers.
What is the current project status?
The last release of EQ2Emu content, database, and source was in September 2025.
The current project is being developed internally while the team solidifies gameplay through level 50. Work is focused on making the classic progression, quests, zones, NPCs, and supporting systems behave consistently before expanding the future release surface.
What are requirements to run the server?
- Minimum requirements for the WorldServer is 8GB, Recommended 16GB+ memory
- Minimum 4-core CPU, Recommend 6-Core+
Which clients are supported?
The 2025 project supports the following clients:
- Trial of Isle (2005)
- Desert of Flames (January 2006 FilePlanet trial)
- Kingdom of Sky (February 2006 disc)
- Altar of Malice (Steam)
Work to include Rise of Kunark (September 2007 disc) is underway as part of the 2026+ project.
Are there differences between the supported clients?
Yes. The clients do not all contain the same zones, voiceovers, or character-creation behavior.
Trial of Isle (2005)
This client includes only:
- Far Journey;
- Isle of Refuge and related epic zones; and
- Stormhold zones.
Desert of Flames (January 2006 FilePlanet trial)
This client contains the classic game but does not include the Desert of Flames expansion zones. The majority of voiceovers are also not included.
Kingdom of Sky (February 2006 disc)
This client includes the classic game and Kingdom of Sky.
Character select is not compatible with the Commoner class. To enter the game, players must go through the name and class selection process; character-select input is ignored by the server for this client.
Altar of Malice (Steam)
Character select is not compatible with the Commoner class. To enter the game, players must go through the name and class selection process; character-select input is ignored by the server for this client.
Why support clients from after the target era?
Later clients can provide useful compatibility options for testing, preservation, and access to assets while the server remains focused on the historical target. Supporting a client does not change the project's goal or imply that all of that client's later-era features are planned for the classic experience.
Where can I find the project repositories?
The repositories associated with the 2025 project are available through Emagi's GitHub repositories.
Additional EQ2Emulator resources are available through the EQ2Emulator-net GitHub organization.
What is planned next?
The near-term plan is to continue stabilizing the classic experience through level 50, with particular attention to:
- original class progression and subclass quest flow;
- Isle of Refuge, the city suburbs, and class-quest NPCs;
- era-appropriate quest presentation and world behavior;
- client-specific compatibility and documented limitations; and
- incremental expansion of supported historical client data, including Rise of Kunark work in the 2026+ project.
This FAQ is intended to grow as historical research, client testing, and implementation work clarify additional era-specific questions.
